Stadt Bauen Heute? explores the development of innovative urban quarters in Germany, addressing key challenges such as climate protection, mobility, social integration, and demographic change. The exhibition contrasts Frankfurt’s historic “Römerstadt” housing estate of 1928 with eight contemporary neighborhoods planned since 1990, from Munich’s “Messestadt Riem” to the “WarnowQuartier” in Rostock. Together, they illustrate the evolution of urban planning strategies—from mono-functional satellite settlements to today’s mixed-use districts that combine living, working, and commerce.
Highlighting both successes and failures, the exhibition emphasizes that cities are never “finished.” Creating flexible, adaptable structures that respond to change remains one of the greatest tasks for future-oriented urban design. Accompanying the show is the board game Plan.Spiel.Stadt developed. The exhibition design is by Studio Kai Linke, with graphic design by VeryVery. Curated by Yorck Förster and Mathias Schnell.
